The science of light modulation is a collective effort led by Coralie Barrau , Director of
Innovation in R&D at Transitions Optical. Comprising of more than 300 international
experts in chemistry, quality control, research, engineering just to name a few, this
cross-disciplinary department relies on each of its members to continuously come up
with personalized solutions to cater for each individual’s specific vision needs.
Researchers and engineers explore the intricate relation between light and vision,
focusing on its impact on retinal health, mood, sleep and myopia. This collaborative
approach ensures that Transitions lenses are designed with cutting-edge science and
real-world relevance, setting a new standard in adaptive technologies and shaping the
future of vision care.
And our scientific rigor was rewarded. Transitions® GEN S™, as well as all the other
Transitions lenses available in our portfolio, are fully designed, developed,
manufactured and marketed in compliance with the ISO 13485:2016 quality
management system for medical devices. Thanks to this accomplishment, we meet all
the necessary regulatory requirements for all major ophthalmic lens markets. This
goes to show that, by integrating advanced research with practical applications, our
team delivers solutions that enable our partners to lead in innovation, offering science-
backed products that meet the demands of an ever-evolving market.
OUR ADVANCED SYMBIOTIC TECHNOLOGY
Transistions® GEN S™: A huge leap forward
for all patients and eye care professionals
Over a five-year period, the R&D department relentlessly put all their expertise into
creating an adaptive lens that would absorb more energy yet with the right balance
between color and performance. Always with the wearer at heart, our goal was to
address patients’ needs in terms of light protection as well as vision quality beyond
visual correction only. After more than 100 000 lenses tested, our boundary breaker
was born:Transitions® Advanced Symbiotic Technology. An unprecedented matrix
structure with the right balance between hard and soft spaces, thus improving the
kinetics of photochromic molecules. This matrix, paired with pioneering super-charged
dyes, turned into the symbiosis required to deliver the performance of a Transitions
GEN S lenses.
This new generation of dynamic lenses darken and fade-back to clear significantly
faster, up to twice as fast as the previous generation1. Delivering enhanced visual
comfort thanks to its mastery of light modulation, Transitions® GEN S™
ensures seamless adaptation to changing light conditions while offering the widest color palette
ever, including the bold new color, ruby.
Our Advanced Symbiotic Technology thus paves the way for a new approach to visual
quality, in which putting forward the key role that light modulation plays in “seeing well”
should be at the forefront of future discussions in the field.
OUR CLINICAL STUDIES
Redefining the field of human vision studies through
a clinical examination of light modulation
The exceptional performance of Transitions® GEN S™ is supported by thorough clinical studies carried out by independent researchers at leading
universities such as the University of Murcia (Spain), directed by Professor Pablo Artal and the University
of Georgia (USA), directed Professor Billy R. Hammond. Rather than focusing solely
on the lens, these studies were designed in part to assess the direct benefits of
Transitions® GEN S™ for the wearer. As such, these studies evaluated key
scenarios, in which lenses were exposed to very bright light so that the activation
process and the fading-back would be closely monitored.
The findings highlight the superior ability of Transitions® GEN S™ lenses to reduce light
stress, delivering a better vision quality, faster in varying light challenging environment.
Transitions® GEN S™ enhances vision quality compared to a clear lens by providing a
39% faster vision recovery in bright light conditions following photostress, as well as a
55% faster recovery time for contrast perception when transitioning from bright to dim
light2. These clinical outcomes underscore that Transitions® GEN S™ delivers
consistent and optimal visual performance under all lighting conditions, all without
compromising on light protection. Transitions® GEN S™ blocks 100% UVA & UVB and
filters up to 32% of Blue Violet light in the clearest state & up to 85% in the darkest
state3.
These peer-to-peer, independent clinical studies carried out by our Spanish and
American colleagues thus demonstrate how Transitions® GEN S™ leverages advanced
light modulation technology to meet the highest standards in dynamic vision solutions,
empowering businesses to offer next-generation performance and reliability to their
customers.
